Vadodara: The largest food organization in the country – the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) – has ventured into organic whole wheat flour with the launch of Amul Organic Atta.
The cooperative dairy giant also announced on Saturday that it would launch other organic products, including organic moong daal, organic tur daal, organic chana daal and organic basmati rice.
Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah had earlier urged the big dairy to start marketing organic agricultural products and develop forward and backward linkages.
“The increasing use of fertilizers and the high cost of fertilizer subsidy of Rs 2 lakh crore is a matter of concern for the government and the high cost of inputs due to fertilizers is an additional burden on farmers,” Ramsinh said. Parmar, chairman of Amul Dairy, while referring to the production of organic atta at Tribhuvandas Patel Mogar Food Complex.
Amul Dairy’s factory in Mogar already produces chocolates and biscuits, among other dairy products.
“We (Amul) are in the process of developing a group of organic/prakrutik farmers and replicating their existing milk model in organic supply. This will increase the incomes of organic farmers and lead to an overall democratization of the organic food industry,” said RS Sodhi, Managing Director of GCMMF (Amul Federation).
The main challenge for farmers is the lack of commercial links for organic products and the high cost of biological testing facilities. “So alongside creating business linkages for organic farmers, we are in the process of setting up bio-testing laboratories at five sites across India which will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and minimize the cost of testing. “, did he declare.
The first laboratory will be established at AmulFed Dairy in Gandhinagar.
“Organic atta is made from 100% certified organic wheat, which does not contain any pesticides,” reads a statement released by the GCMMF. He added that the entire chain is certified organic from fields to processing facilities and trading organizations.
The atta will be launched across Gujarat from the first week of June.
