Why does a move to Fulham work for Loftus-Cheek?
Quite simply, Loftus-Cheek needs to play football.
That horrific Achilles tendon injury in May 2019 derailed his career as he established himself in Chelsea midfielder.
Moving to Fulham will give him the opportunity to play regularly in the Premier League.
Why is Chelsea letting him go?
Chelsea’s spectacular spending madness in this window has created too much competition in the midfield for Frank Lampard to guarantee him the minutes he needs to regain his rhythm.
Lampard has been open in recent days about his view that Loftus-Cheek would be better served by going elsewhere for the time being – although he is adamant that the 24-year-old’s long-term future is at Stamford Bridge. Even Ross Barkley’s departure for Aston Villa hasn’t changed that position.
Chelsea and Lampard are now hoping that Loftus-Cheek plays regularly for Fulham and is starting to feel like the extremely talented footballer he is again.
How important is a signing to Scott Parker?
Loftus-Cheek will bring undoubted quality to a side that clearly need competition if they are to survive in the Premier League this year.
Their opening results illustrated the gulf that exists between the winning side of the promotion and what may be needed for Premier League success. Fulham is already well stocked in central areas, with Mario Lemina, Harrison Reed and returning Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa already improving this area of the squad.
Fulham will be hoping Loftus-Cheek can repeat the form he showed on loan at Crystal Palace three years ago, and have the impact fellow Chelsea Barkley once had at Aston Villa.
There is no doubt about his quality, and for a team that needs a creative boost as well as defensive strength, his arrival could well be one of the most important in the club’s window so far.
Did Fulham have a good window?
Fulham eventually managed to tackle the areas that needed support.
The deadline changes for Adarabioyo and Joachim Andersen certainly eased the tension that had built up over the window, especially as the team struggled defensively once their Premier League campaign began.
But in other areas, Fulham has recruited well, especially at the rear, while keeping Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa is another key advantage. With Loftus-Cheek added to the mix, there have certainly been some quality additions.
Whether this can be considered a successful window will depend on the impact of their new additions in the coming weeks.
