Local garment manufacturers say they have made remarkable achievements in factory compliance and labor safety, referring to Canadian clothing brand Gildan Activewear’s plan to expand into Bangladesh.

“We believe Gildan’s decision will send a positive message about the country’s garment market to foreign investors,” said Mohammad Hatem, executive chairman of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA).

Referring to a senior Gildan official, Just Style In, a apparel sourcing and textile industry news outlet, recently reported that the Canadian apparel manufacturer is “moving fast” with the construction of the first textile facilities. and “large-scale” tailoring in Bangladesh.

“The capacity we are bringing to Bangladesh, which consists of two large state-of-the-art facilities, will be 100% geared and dedicated to the manufacture of fashion t-shirts,” the report quoted CEO Glenn Chamandy. by Gildan.

Gildan began its journey in Bangladesh in 2019. The manufacturer, GAB Ltd, produces T-shirts in the Dhaka suburb of Baipail. Garments manufactured by Gildan in Bangladesh carry the Gildan Activewear brand.

A local backlink manager who is familiar with GAB Ltd’s operations said, “The existing production facility at Baipail is huge. Many local factories supply them with raw materials. [Gildan].”

Meanwhile, Mohammad Hatem told the Business Standard he welcomes Gildan’s expansion plan and wants the company to invest more in value-added products and diversified items.

Local garment manufacturers said Bangladesh’s garment sector has maintained good export prospects, which is also expected to continue in the future. The brighter prospect helps international brands increase their trust in Bangladesh.

In addition to Bangladesh, Gildan Activewear operates in certain countries in Central America and the Caribbean. Industry insiders said Gildan may downsize its offices in some countries to support expansion in Bangladesh.

A significant portion of senior staff at Gildan’s Bangladesh plant are foreign nationals, most of whom are from Honduras.

According to sources, knitwear manufacturer GAB Ltd is a member of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). Georges Sam Yu Sum is the general manager of the company in Bangladesh.

About the prospect of Gildan’s trip to Bangladesh, Just Style said that the manufacturer revealed plans to develop a new manufacturing complex in Bangladesh in May 2019. The company then said that its full production capacity was capable of ‘reach $500 million in sales.

According to Macrotrends, Gildan Activewear’s annual revenue for 2019 was $2.824 billion. However, in 2020 it dropped to $1.98 billion.
