Kiwi fashion blogger and socialite Jaime Ridge has denounced Jacinda Ardern and the government over what she describes as the “completely unconstitutional” MIQ system after missing a piece while stuck in the United States.
The daughter of Kiwi TV personality and real estate agent Sally Ridge says she has been contacted by hundreds of her subscribers who are also unable to return to New Zealand due to the ongoing MIQ system.
“How the hell do you get a spot in MIQ?” Ridge wrote in an Instagram story.
âNumber 9000 in the ‘queue’ yesterday and I’m absolutely baffled. The flights are booked and have been for weeks, then the government changed the rules (again) … Who runs this show. A total lack of competence. Just a bunch of muppets.
The snark tsunami that greeted Jamie Ridge’s confused statements that MIQ was unconstitutional (we don’t have a Jamie constitution) was justified, as was criticism of the blatant privilege of his humble bragging rights on social media.
Why do you leave the country during an unpredictable pandemic for anything other than an emergency and then have the audacity to bitch about not re-entering the country ???
But the mocking and fair indignation aside, it would be unwise to erase the anger. The New Zealand diaspora is genuinely angry and hurt by the quarantine measures.
The million-kiwi diaspora does not normally vote in large numbers, but I suspect that the incandescent rage MIQ elicits among those locked up in their homes is only going to develop once the new restrictions for Omicron come into effect. Game.
New Zealanders watch the horror in real time as Omicron sweeps the world and have no mercy on the plight of the kiwis who try to re-enter the country in a bid to keep Covid out.
Domestic Kiwis and the excluded become as distant on issues as the vaccinated and the unvaccinated.
This will have political ramifications.
In the last election, the Greens did wrong in their generally high overseas support vote because Ardern’s global fame eclipsed the Greens in that election, but the frustration is directly linked to Jacinda’s politics, so I think the Greens will take this vote again, then some.
Our diaspora is furious, and if the Green Party’s rhetoric is too subdued for its anger, the ACTs are opening-the-borders-and-letting-the-free-market-decide-the politics of death is for you.
ACT politics has a scent of critical revenge that is the perfect cocktail of revenge that people locked out of their own homes want to inflict on those who refuse to open the door.
I guess our diaspora is much more motivated to vote in 2023 than we ever envisioned and their anger at being locked out will be fierce.
I believe the Greens and ACT will reap a powerful harvest of their anger and fear.
Mocking Jamie Ridge misses that.
