March 9, 1896

There could still be a baseball club in Sidney this summer. Those interested are urged to meet at the county registrar’s office next week. The main objective will be to raise sufficient funds for the season.

The Sidney Electric Railway will become a reality. The company issues shares to interested persons. Please see Charles Timeus. You will have to pay 10% of the share price immediately. Work to secure the right-of-way will begin next week.

100 years ago

March 9, 1921

There’s a new paint business in town. This is the Peter Cook and Sons partnership. They erected a store at 725 North Oak Avenue, east of the Buckeye churn factory. The men will engage in the painting of automobiles.

One of our community’s most respected financiers had a nasty crash on the north side of the square yesterday afternoon. JF Studevant was coming out of the Voiretta cafeteria when he fell, Mr. Studevant is 96 years old. He had considerable bruises on his hands and face from the fall.

75 years ago

March 9, 1946

The Shelby County Elections Board recently held its election. They elect officers every two years by law. Over the next two years, Roy Fry, President, Robert F. Kaser, Clerk of the Board of Directors, and Clyde Milhoff, Deputy Clerk, will serve over the next two years. The other members of the board will be Carl Lehman and LE Marrs.

We all know there has been a series of burglaries in recent weeks in our county. An arrest in Champaign County may also have solved our crimes. Three men were arrested in Urbana and placed in prison. These men appear to have been successful in landing the Shelby County jobs.

50 years ago

March 9, 1971

Members of the newly formed Sidney Sunset Kiwanis Club recently came together to elect presidents for upcoming events this year. The announcement was made by Jack McCoy and Don Bolllinger. The new presidents will include James Abbott, Jacob Angerer, Ed Smith, Herb McVicker, Paul Shipman, Robert Burns, Robert McFarland and John Amos.

Pete Rose disagrees with the management of the Cincinnati Reds. The star certainly earns $ 105,000 a year. He hit 316 last year and is a two-time league batting champion. The Reds won’t pay him a dime more. Rose wants a modest raise.

March 9, 1996

The Building Industry Association of Shelby County has selected Cynthia McRill as Member of the Year. She has been a member for three years. McRill is the Vice President of Loans at Mutual Federal Savings and Loan. The announcement was made at the association’s annual meeting. John Westerheide is the outgoing president.

One of the three men accused of the murder of Wilma Arnett has been brought to justice. Kevin Yarborough has pleaded not guilty. Arnett’s body, who was murdered, was found alongside a road on May 10, 1994. Judge Schmitt said he would appoint two lawyers to represent him.
